The Ohio State Buckeyes and Notre Dame Fighting Irish each won dramatic semifinal games that were not decided until late in the fourth quarter. Their reward for doing so is a tilt in the College Football Playoff National Championship at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Monday, Jan. 20.

Ohio State’s last national championship (in the 2014 season) came much more recently than Notre Dame’s (1988). I dive into the data and the public’s perception of both teams when discussing my Ohio State vs. Notre Dame early picks, predictions & odds.

Before the CFP semifinals, Ohio State was anywhere from a 7.5 to 8.5-point favorite over Notre Dame based on the lookahead lines. Based on each team's performance in the last game, I do not believe the line should have increased this much.

Ohio State’s two-touchdown margin of victory came after it stopped Texas on a first-and-goal from the one-yard line when up seven, culminating that possession in a defensive touchdown.

Meanwhile, Notre Dame lost the turnover battle and averaged 2.8 yards per carry, but its 11 conversions on 17 third-down attempts propelled it to a gutsy 27-24 victory over Penn State.

There is concern over the Fighting Irish offensive line injuries, as two starting offensive linemen left their win over Penn State. But they will have 11 days to get healthy before this national championship, and Notre Dame has overcome injuries to key players all season.

If the Fighting Irish get positive injury news and can get one or both of their offensive linemen back who left the semifinal game, this line should move in their favor, with +7.5 being the likely floor.
