New Jersey Lawmakers Introduce Sweepstakes Casino Bill
New Jersey is already home to many of our best sports betting sites and real-money online casinos, and a new market might be on the horizon.
In an exclusive with , the Social and Promotional Games Association (SPGA) stated that a legal sweepstakes market is potentially about to form in the Garden State after Assemblyman Clinton Calabrese introduced a new sweepstakes bill on Jan. 16.
This new bill would require New Jersey sweepstakes casinos to be regulated, licensed, and taxed like any iGaming counterparts. This legislation would be the first of its kind, as sweepstakes casinos are currently unregulated in the United States.
The SPGA, launched in September 2024, advocates the responsible operation of social games that offer promotional sweepstakes prizes and devised a new code of conduct for its members in December.
The code highlights the processes already in effect at SPGA member sites and most social casinos while also providing a foundational framework. This includes age verification to limit purchases to users 18 and older, proper identity verification, location verification of customers, and AML policies to ensure the correct transaction monitoring.
The SPGA submitted an official statement in response to the New Jersey sweepstakes bill, saying, “The SPGA welcomes Assemblyman Calabrese’s bill. The SPGA and its members are advocates for clear regulations that enable transparent, innovative, and responsible social and promotional gaming experiences. The bill aligns with our core objective of reinforcing the well-established legality and legitimacy of social sweepstakes games, which millions of American adults enjoy.”
While regulation may be coming for sweepstakes casinos, these operators are unlikely to go away according to experts. Spectrum listed sweepstakes among its top gaming trend predictions for 2025, one of eight new additions to the list.
iGaming also made the list, and the NJ online casino scene is already bustling.
